Flusing PEX with Bleach
  • I have to shock my system with bleach about once a year - will bleach have an effect of Pex piping?
  • Are you using this PEX for heating or domestic water? I use PEX extensively, for both heating and water lines, and have never heard of using bleach to flush it. I've heard of algae growing inside of opaque PEX. Are you using bleach to treat algae? I would suggest you use a diluted solution because pure bleach is very harsh. And be sure to contact the manufacturer to make sure it doesn't void their warranty.
  • Ryan, This water is home use and my well gets the "rotten egg" smell about once a year and the general cure is flushing the system with bleach. Currently I have iron pipes but I plan on replacing these with pex pipe.
  • DJ, I suspect you have a high sulfur content in your water that is causing your "rotten egg" smell. The bleach is acting as a chlorinator, which will eliminate the odor temporarily. A filtration system would most likely eliminate the need to flush the system.
